Town Council Approves New Netflix Complex

Los Gatos? Town Council voted 3-2 to approve the construction of a new Netflix campus on a 21.5 acre parcel of land at the intersection of Albright Way and Winchester Boulevard. With the vote, LG Business Park LLC can now begin removing existing buildings from the site and begin construction of a new business park with as much as 550,000 square feet of office space and 168 senior housing units.
Dozens of Los Gatos residents attended the meeting to protest the decision for a wide range of reasons. Some opposed the removal of mature trees to make room for construction. Others claimed that it would block their view of the surrounding mountains, while still other spoke about the added traffic that this would bring to their neighborhood.
They also worried about the height of the new buildings, which can reach 85 feet. This is an exception to a town ordinance, which allows commercial buildings to be no higher than 35 feet, though a special exception was made for the current Netflix headquarters, which stands at 55 feet. Major Joe Pyrzinksi rejected this claim, saying that, ?“If the architecture is extraordinary, then you can have a contributing building. If it’s poor architecture, it doesn’t matter how tall it is.?
Netflix has come under fire recently because of its new pricing scheme, and many users have threatened to leave the site for rivals such as Blockbuster or Facets. The price hike was justified, however, because of increasing costs related to the rise of these rivals.
When Netflix was the only company offering its service, studios were willing to provide their films to Netflix at bargain-basement prices. Now that consumers can choose between everything from Blockbusters to Amazon to Hulu to Facets, studios are in a better position to raise their prices.
